Senior Dispatcher / Training Officer

Public Safety

You're the dispatcher everyone else turns to when the board lights up and things get complicated. You handle the hardest calls, train new dispatchers, and serve as quality assurance for the center. As a Communications Training Officer (CTO), you sit next to trainees plugged into the same console and coach them through live emergencies — which is exactly as stressful as it sounds. You set the standard, and when a new hire washes out, it weighs on you even though it shouldn't.

What you'll actually do

  • 01Handle the most complex multi-agency calls that newer dispatchers can't manage alone
  • 02Train new dispatchers by sitting next to them during live calls and not grabbing the headset (usually)
  • 03Conduct quality assurance reviews on recorded calls and provide feedback
  • 04Update dispatch protocols and standard operating procedures
  • 05Mentor dispatchers who are burning out — which is most of them, eventually
  • 06Coordinate with supervisors on shift coverage and performance evaluations
  • 07Stay current on EMD protocols, CAD system updates, and new communication technology
